Victor D. Wisnosky, retired hotel keeper, of Waipukurau, has filed a petition in bankruptcy.

The meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay. Power Board, held at Waipukurau to-day, was a very short one, lasting barely half an hour.

An Auckland telegram states that Mr. J. Cotter declined nomination, for Tauranga as the labour candidate.

The annual meeting of the Havelock North Football Club will be held at the Town Board office to-morrow evening at 7.30. The next best despatch for the United Kingdom and Continent of Europe will be by the Athenic, closing to-morrow at Hastings at noon. A Sydney cable states that the City Council discussed the motion to rescind the city surveyor appointment. The debate was adjourned till next week. Miss G. Duncan, of the Napier Tccnnical School, has been appointed senior mistress of the Wanganui Technical School, and will leave Napier cany next week.

A shop day will be held on Saturday next by the Women’s National Reserve. in the right-of-way kindly lent by the Heretaunga Club. Contributions of any kind will be thankfully received. The annual social in connection with t]je Hastings Baptist Church .will take place this evening. Repprts of the year’s work will be given, interspersed with musical items. All members and adherents are heartily invited.

The chairman and Crs Bolton and Ellinghum. of the Pahiatua County Council, have been appointed to attend any conference called in connection with the joint by-laws drafted by the Hawke’s Bay County Council. At the opening of the power station at Waikaremoaua to morrow, Messrs W. J. McGrath-and J. Blake will represent the Napier Harbour Board, and Mr W. G. Jarvis the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board. A London cable states that Air Evan Parry, engineer-in-chief of the company responsible for the Arthur’s Pass section of the New Zealand Midland Railway, will sail by the Tainui on March Bth to attend tho official opening.

Exhibitors are reminded'that all entries for the forthcoming autumn show close to-day. For the convenience of exhibitors the society’s office. Tennyson street, Napier, and Mr. F. C. Wilkinson’s office. Queen street. Hastings, will be open this evening between 7 and 9 o’clock.

At last evening’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Swimming Centre, the question of a minimum distance for open men’s races and the grading ot swimmers was left to a sub-committec to report on. It was suggested that a general club picnic should be held at Haumoana on March 25.

The combined committee of the Napier High School Parents’ League and Old Boys’ Association, have advertised several competitions in connection with the grand High School fair, which is to be held in the school grounds on Saturday, April 7. All the articles made in the various competitions will become the propertv of the committee, and will be sold, the funds going towards the fair. On Monday evening last a motorist had a narrow escape from death on the Te Mata road, Havelock North. While passing a fruit cart on the bridge near St. Hill’s lane, he dimmed his light, and before he was aware of it his car ran over the embankment and landed sideways in the creek. The driver fortunately escaped with a bruised hand. The car was damaged, but not badly. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, who arrived in Napier last evening from Wellington, visited the East Coast railway works to-day on an inspection. To-morrow morning Mr Coates will leave for Wairoa, arid will perform the opening ceremony of the Waikaremoaua power-liousee of the initial stage in the development of hydroelectric power. The Minister is accompanied by Mrs Coates, Messrs G. Witty, M.P. (Riccarton), Aicken, Balneavis, and Godfrey, and Aliss Hibbard (typists.) This afternoon Mr Coates made a visit of inspection to the Napier Post Office, accompanied by Mr L. Meili vri do, M.P.

Holding that he was a drunkard antf a confirmed criminal, two Justices of the Peace, Messrs G. W. Venables and D. H. Edgar, sentenced Archibald John Kirk, n fireman, 35 years of age, to six months’ imprisonment without the option at* the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning for using absccne language in Station street yesterday. On a charge of being idle and disorderly while drunk, Kirk was convicted and discharged. The police stated that Kirk had a bad record.

A committee meeting of the Heretaunga Swimming Club was held last night, when Mr. W. Le Bas presided. It was decided to apply to the centre to have C. L. Crooks’s 220 yards breaststroke record of 3min. 18sec. made official. The secretary was instructed to write to Messrs Stickland and Bryant thanking them for their donation of a handsome cup. It was decided to give the cup to the one gaining most points in all open club races during the season (cup events excepted). Final arrangements were made for the carnival at the Maddison Baths on Friday next.

Mr. A, J. Hastie. of Hastings, a butcher, met with a painful accident in Heretaunga street, near the Cosy Theatre. at about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. It appears that he was ruling on his butcher’s cart, along with the driver, when an approaching trap nearly ran into them, and the driver, swerving suddenly to avoid the impending collision Mr. Hastie was flung off his seat and fell heavily on the road. He was badly cut about the face, dazed, and much shaken, but after a time he was able to remount the cart, and he was driven to his home. He was found to be suffering from slight concussion and this morning he was reported to bp no better.*

The anual meeting of the Hastings branch of the New Zealand Labour Party "-as held last evening. There was a good attendance of members. The chairman, in presenting the report, pointed out that the branch had during the past year maintained its interest in political and municipal matters. The membership was steadily increasing, but a more determined effort should be made to place Labour aims and objects before the workers in this district. Considering that the branch had been called up to finance a Parliamentary election during the year, the balance-sheet disclosed a very healthy position and reflected great credit upon the work of the financial secretary. TJie following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mr. E. H. Sutherland; secretary, Mr. R. Burns. All the other executive positions were duly filled. The secretary announced that Mr. Collings, Queensland organiser for the Australian Labour Party would be speaking in Hastings on April 6 and a number of meetings would be addressed next week bMr. Mcllvride, M.P.. particulars of which will be advertised later. 1
