SUBMERGED WRECKAGE.
STRUCK BY THE CYGNET. Christchurch, Jan. 8. The coastal steamer Cygnet struck a submerged object two miles off Cape Campbell reef at 8 a.m. on Sunday, on her way from Nelson to Kaikoura. The mate saw a dark object ahead and put the helm down, but the vessel bumped slightly twice and the engines stopped, suggesting that the wreckage had fouled the propeller. The vessel will dock before commencing the return trip at the end of the week.
