S. Millin, A. McKenzie. W. D. Southcott, emergencies. M. Blake, and Wood. NOTES. (By “Onlooker.”) * St. Matthew’s easily accounted for. Havelock on Saturday last, securing a three-point win. The Saints put up 68, Watkins 34. expoiting the pull effectively. Webb bowled a very good length, but placed his field very poorly. Ball 21 was the only one to offer serious resistance in Havelock’s second strike. Watkins sent down some good medium-paced stuff, taking three for 20.

Hastings got a two-point win over Y.M.C.A., who made 126. Ball made some good drives in his 60, and Griffin 17 and Carr 12 showed a very straight bat. Northe, fast left-hand, was treated with respect, and took six-for 20. The Junior rep. contest, Hastings v. Napier furnished the best exposition of cricket seen on a Hhstings ground this season.

Batting first, Hastings made 245. Blewett 58 not out. was scratchy, but Pearson 39 made some very clean drives. Bickley 35 brought off some aggressive square leg shots, and Northe 31 hit hard and effectively. Extras got 30, but the wicket-keeper was nevertheless pretty fair. The fielding of th© Napier team "was good though Vogtherr dropped Blewett, and Price missed Watkinson. Anderson kept a good length in the few overs he had, but Elliott and Cohen did the best work, though neither got a wicket. The running after lunch was painful, mainly through the obstinacy of Blewett.

Napier compiled 246 for seven. Elliott, 41, put up the best exhibition of the day. pulling and cutting with great power. Guy. 611 also made som" good leg-shots, as c|id Lovell. 20. Pirie played a good knock at the end, getting 37 not out, while Martin, 19, looked booked itfor a score* Hastings’ fielding was patchy, losing them the game. Godfrey. Watkinson, and Northe all dropped catches,' while the ground fielding was very uncertain. Bickley bowled the best ball, but was unlucky in the way of dropped catches. Corless, two for 27. was removed just as lie was getting his length. Northe

bowled too short, while Goldfinch never looked like taking wickets. Webb would have been invaluable with his good length stuff. The bowlers bowled too much on the middle and leg stumps to Guy. Elliott, and Lovell, and there was also a tendency to bowl short.

The concluding stage of the game was marked by fine sportsmanship on the part of Watkinson, the Hastings skipper. At time Napier were 17 behind, with three wickets to fall, and as the umpire took off the bails Watkinson motioned for the game to proceed. with the result that Napier put up the required runs without further loss. This is the spirit that makes cricket, and Watkinson’s action is worthy of the highest prise. The system of selection in the junior grade is not working too well, and it is unquestionable that a. combination of Watkinson, Bickley, Mclvor (2), Blewett. Northe. Webb, Ball. Pearson Mead, and Corless would # have been stronger than the team which took the field on Saturday. The steadiness oi List and Ball seems to have been overlooked by the selectors, and these two might well have taken the places of the Mclvors on Saturday last.
