AMERICAN COTTON.
BOLL WEEVIL MENACE.
SCIENTIFIC CRUSADE AGAINST PEST.
New York, Jan. 3.
The American Cotton Growers’ Association has announced a subscription of 2,500.000 dollars to fight the boll weevil, which threatens to des-* troy the United States cotton industry as completely as it destroyed it in South America and Mexico last century. The association calls th© weevil th© greatest menace to American agriculture. Dr. Aliller Hutchison, a former chief expert in all Edison industries, has been appointed to take charge of the work of experimenting on a large scale. He will begin immediately and at the same time a large investment will be* made to increase the production of calcium arsenate, which is the best known insectitude with which to deal with the pest.—(A. and N.Z.)
