NELLIE BRAMLEY COMPANY.

“SUNDAY," BY THOMAS RACE- | WOOD. Speaking of the production of “Sunday," which is to be produced here by the Nellie Bramley Company’ on second night of season, the “N.Z. Herald” says: “Genuine heart interest and natural humour are combined in "Sunday,” an American play written with that directness of appeal and strength of purpose which distinguishes the work of so many American dramatists. The story it tells is a simple and straightforward one, ranging from quaint comedy, through tender sentiment to stirring drama. First presented here some years ago, the piece awakened pleasant memories when staged by the Nellie Bramley Company on Saturday afternoon and evening at His Majesty’s Theatre. It was responsible for crowded houses and . was welcomed as an old friend by those who were familiar with its Stirling qualities, while it charmed and interested those who had not witnessed it previously. Its success was proof enough that the experiment being made by William F. Russell, the organiser of the company, of presenting by arrangement with J. C. Williamson good drama at popular prices Is timely and acceptable. The role of Sunday is one which no mediocre actress could interpret with any degree of satisfaction. Miss Bramley, however, a true artist whose career is now being developed along the right tines, and who gains fresh and well-deserved laurels with each new part she appears in, had no difficulty in impressing her audiences on Saturday both with the lovable nature of the girl portrayed and the ability she herself possesses. Her work in the opening scenes, in which Sunday is presented as gauche and untutored, Wayward and rough of speech, contrasted remarkably with her later work showing the girl refined after a period of education and holding her own among people of a high trade society. But it was in the sincerity of her sentimental acting and the depth of her emotional moments that she was enchanting. A lowed as a whole, the interpretations of this oirl of many moods by Miss Brainlev was such as to place her m the foremost rank of Australian actresses. Already a firm favourite m Auckland, she will win many more admirers in the part of Sunday.” The box plan will open Hi Riddell’s Friday morning next.
