The Mayor of Hastings, Mr W. Hart, returned home last evening from Wellington. Mrs E. W. Watson and Miss Fanny Watson left Hastings this morning on a visit to Wellington. 1 Sir William Vicars has been appointed chairman of the wireless board at Sydney. Cr. R. Baker, of Hastings met with a slight accident to his leg a couple of days ago, which will necessitate his resting for a little while. On inquiry at Dr. Morgan’s private hospital it was learned that Miss Rita Pilcher who underwent an operation is now making splendid progress towards recovery. The Rev. A. Hunt who has been taking the pulpit at the Hastings Presbyterian Church in the absence of the Rev P. Ramsay, left accompanied by his wife for Wellington this morning. An old resident of Shirley (Canterbury) passed away in the person of Mr. Daniel Pankhurst, in his ninetieth year. The late Mr. Pankhurst had resided in the district for forty-five years. A State funeral accorded the late Sir C. G. Wade in Sydney yesterday was attended by a distinguished gathering, including the Governor and the Prime Minister. The route was lined by thousands of mourners. Advice has been received in Auckland that Mrs. Muriwai Uru. widow of the late Mr. Uru. M.P., intends to contest the Southern Maori seat at the forcoming election. Mrs. Uru. who is a daughter of the late Rev. Mutu. of Kaiapoi, is well-known in the South Island. From Wanganui comes word of fte death of Mrs Christina Fraser, wife of Mr Hugh Fraser, and a daughter of the late Mr James McDonnell (“Big Mac”), of “The Hoe,” Lower Raiigitikei. Mr Fraser and his wife were the first settlers in the back blocks 30 miles up the Pohangina river. On Tuesday four days’ leave of absence from the House of Representatives was granted Mr. A. McNicol (Pahiatua) on account of illness, three days’ leave was granted to Dr. Thacker (Christchurch East) on account of urgent public business, and two days’ leave was granted Air. F. N. Bartram (Grey Lynn) on account of illness in his family. Mr. Robert Sanderson, of Duart road, Havelock North, has been in the Napier Hospital for over a month, whithier he had to go to undergo a somewhat serious operation. Although he had a slight setback, his many friends will now be glad to hear that lift is reported to be doing very well now. The funeral of Mr. Frederick'Alfred Culliford, who diecF"suddenly in Hastings on Tuesday morning last, took place this afternoon, when a large gathering, including a considerable number of slaughtermen and other workers in the employ of the freezing companies operating in this district, followed the remains to the Hastings cemetery. Rev. R. T. Hall conducted the Church of England service at the graveside. With the departure of the Makura this week New Zealand’t two rcp<-e--sentatives, Miss Gwitha Shand, of Christchurch, and Miss Pauline Hoeft, of Auckland, left to take part in the world’s swimming championships that are to be held shortly at Honolulu. They will both compete in tb& 100yds and 440yds. and probably in the 220 yds. Apart from these distances they are also likely to take part in handicap events and dashes over lesser distances. Prior to their departure they were each presented with a gold fem brdoch by Mr. A. J. Fernandez on behalf of' the Auckland Swimming Centre.
