Mr. G. Arnold, Waimea West. Nelson, has had identified by Mr. M. D. Miller, Government Entomologist, a native beetle which recently has attained some notoriety on account of its attacks on wooden buildings and on milled timbers. Mr. Arnold gives a serious account of the beetle’s destructiveness: “About two years ago I lifted the floor covering of a room in my house. I found that the timber all round the fireplace was completely rotten, riddled by the grub. I took up all the floor, painted the scantling with kerosene, drenched all the ground and the scantling with Jeyes’ fluid, and put down a now floor. To-day, August 15th. J took up the covering again. The grubs were through the new floor around the fireplace. T found that they started from a plate that runs across the front of the fireplace, which evidently held grubs and perfect insects out of the wood. I drenched all around to-day with sheepdip and then with kerosene, and put the floor down again. The rrubs bore holes about as wide as four-inch nails. Some carpenters here state that it is the red pine borer, others state that it is not. Ttis a dreadful pest.” Its official title is Ambeeodontus tristis.
