His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral< (Viscount Jelliuoe) is at present suffering from the effects of a cold. Lady Hunter was given a reception at the Early Settiers’ reunion on Monday night. Sir George Hunter being the president of the association. Mr. Edwards, manager of the Napier Gas Company, is at present in Nelson reporting on the local gasworks. Mr. Walter Irving, the oldest resident oi Reefton, died on Saturday night, aged 79, says a Press Association message. He arrived at Reefton in 1886. A Sydney cable announces the death of Sir Charles Gregory Wade, cx-Pre-mier of New South Wales, following on a sudden heart seizure while presiding in the court on Friday. Mr. Albert Russell, who is very well known in musical circles throughout New Zealand, has been admitter as a director of the firm of J. J. Niven and Company, Limited, of Wellington and Napier. A lady very well known in New Zealand in years gone by, Mrs Annie Augusta Edwards, passed away at 7 Sloane Street, on July 31st. She was the widow of the Hou. Nathaniel Edwards, M L.C.. of Nelson. Mr. Mark Y’oung. the chief inspector for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, accompanied by Mrs. Young, were tlmjugh passengers for Honolulu by the’Makura. Mr. Y’oung will attend the Pan-Pacific Commercial Conference at Honolulu. Mr. b. O’Neill, who has resigned the position of first assistant subeditor of “The Sun” to join the literary staff of the Times,” was farewelled by the literary staff of “The Sun” on Saturday, and presented with a case of pipes and other smoking accessories. M r - W* A - Whitlock, of Hastings, succeeds Mr. O’Neill. Mr. W. H. Hales, who has been stationmaster at Palmerston North for the past six months, haz received notice of his appointment as Chief Clerk in the District Traffic Manager’s Office l , Wellington. Mr. Hales leaves for headquarters to-morrow. Pending the arrival of his successor, Mr. C. E. Fowke, Chief Clerk, will be actingstationmaster. Dr. A. W. Hogg, who has been medical superintendent of the King George Hospital, Rotorua, for the last two and a half years has resigned from the Health Department in order that lie may enter into private practice and will relinquish his duties about the end of October. Dr. W. S. Wallis, orthopaedic surgeon at the King George Hospital, will in all probability succeed Dr. Hogg. Mr. A. J. S. Thomson, who was accidentally killed at Hawke’s Bay, on Friday, was for many years in the service of the Bank of New Zealand ana retired on pension in 1918 owing to ill-health. Re went to Napier to reside two years ago, and about two months ago was advised to seek outdoor employment, and consequently went out to the East Coast railway works. Mr. Thomson was an old Napier High School boy. He saw service in the Boer war, leaving with the second Contingent. He was the eldest son of £he late Mr. A. B. Thomson. formerly of Napier, and was 45 years of age. Deceased leaves a widow and three children, his mother (Mrs A. B. Thomson, Wellington), also three brothers, Mr. Frank D. (private secretary to the Prime Minister) and Mr. H. D. Thomson, Wellington, and Mr. A. M. Thomson, Gisborne. Writing under date August 4, a London correspondent says that there are many people in New Zealand who will rememebr Mr. Frederick Louis Mieville. one of New Zealand’s early colonists —indeed, he Was one of the “Canterbury pilgrims,” who arrived in the barque Dominion at Port Lyttelton iit 1851. The news of his death will be received with regret, although he had attained the great age of 92 years. Mr. Mieville died at The Goodlands/ Maidstone, on July 29. From 1851 to 1868 he lived in New Zealand, being first a cadet on Mr. Suisted’s run at Good wood. Then he took up the run which he named Glenham. in Southland, adjoining the sheep run of his father-in-law. Dr. F. H. Richwhose son afterwards became member for .Mataura. On returning to England in 1868, Mr.»Mieville became a member of the Ixjndon Stock Exchange, an institution with which his family had long been connected.
