NAPIER-HASTINGS V. WAIROA. AVAIROA THE AVINNERS. There was a good attendance on Mcljean Park. Napier, on Saturday, when the Wairou representatives met and defeated a Napier-Hastings team by 11 to 6. The game was a thoroughly interesting one. though there was not much spectacular play. Wairoa possessed a line pack and deserved their win. There were quite a, number of casualties. R. O’Douogliue and Rathan of the home team, and Kingston of the AAairoa side having to vacate their positions. L. Brownlie and Dine tilled the vacancies in the local team and McGregor took Kingston's place. THE TEAMS. Napier-Hastings (black and white): Yates, Grenside, J. Blake, AV. Barclay, O'Donoghue, W. Ormond, Pourri, J. McGregor, AValker. G. Ormond. THE GAME. The home team were soon aggressive, and had the Greens defending hard. The attack was not sustained, and Scott kicking through caught Yates napping, and the home team were called upon to show of their best. Pothan, Bowker, and Barclay cleared with a good rush to half-way, but Wairoa were not to be denied. Breaking away they were soon on the attack, and, Yates being beaten for the ball. J. Ormond following up fast, gathered in and scored in the corner. Winniata failed with the kick. 3—o. After the kick-off again the liome backs tried to open the game up. but the AVairoa forwards were too clever, and kept them down. The ball was being well handled and some good line kicking was shown. Kingston, after a good passing bout bv the Wairoa backs, made for the line, but Grenside, fleet of foot, came across the field and made a splendid tackle on the line, and saved. Exciting playfollowed in the home territory. A free kick relieved, winch Bowker and Batchelor succeeded in carrying on. From a line out Barclay secured and centred well, but AVinniata knocking on pulled the Napier rush up. The home side was still attacking in the Greens’ 25 when half-time sounded, with the scores: AVairoa 3, NapierHastings 0. - resuming the ball went to F. Ormond, who fumbled, and before he could recover Yates was on him. Gemmell came up and securing sent the hall to Batchelor, who got over at the corner. Yates’ kick was a dud. AVairoa 3, Napier-Hastings 3. The greens were soon hard on the attack, Scott and Pourri standing out. Kirkpatrick and J. Blake cleared to half-way, but mly for a short time, when the greens were back again. Pothan stopped a hard rush, but his kick in saving was marked by Pourri, who made a magnificent drop kick and the ball went beautifully over the bar. AVairoa 6, Napier-Hastings 3. The forward, in the ensuing play, were prominent and the game went ui> and down the field. The greens were agaiis* in the home territory, where Grenside secured at the end of a line-out, and making upfield transferred to J - . Blake, then to Barclay, who when tackled by AVinniata sent the leather in again to Yates, who finished off the best piece of work of the game by scoring in the corner. His own kick was a failure. AVairoa 6, Napier-Hastings 6. A few minutes after the kick-off J. AValker put in a strong run, and on being tackled, sent the ball to J. Ormond, who scored in the corner. AVinniata's kick was sure. AVairoa 11, Napier, Hastings 6. The game was keenly contested towards the end, but no further scores resulted, AVairoa thus coming out on top by 11 points to 6. Mr. F. Tyne capably refereed. SEDDON SHIELD MATCH. Nelson. Sept. 23. A Seddon Shield match this afternoon resulted in a drawn game between Nelson and Buller, six all. Nelson retains the shield. AUCKLAND v. AVELLINGTON. Auckland, Sept. 24. The AVellington Rugby representatives were defeated by Auckland by 54 points to nil. The Aucklanders outclassed the visitors and had scored 28 at half time. Ifwerson kicked ten goals and scored one try, contributing 27 points to Auckland’s total. AVELLINGTON v. MANAAVATUHOROAVHENUA. AVellington, Sept. 21. AVellington gained a narrow victory over a Manawatu-Horowhenua combined tea.™ on Saturday, winning m the last few minutes by 17 points to 16. The home team showed obvious signs of extreme staleness, the forwards particularly suffering from the effect of the protracted season.
