HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL.

INCREASED ATTENDANCE CERTAIN. NEED FOR A NEW BUILDING. “There is no possibility of Cabinet making a grant during the present financial year for the erection oi a new Technical High School on the new site at Hastings,” stated the Education Department when communicating with the Hawke’s Bay Education Board yesterday. The department further inquired for particulars of the probable minimum additional space whicn would he required at the beginning of the next year. Mr. W. L. Dunn, secretary, stated that he was now ascertaining from pupils in standard 6 attending Hastings schools how many would be attending the Technical School next year. From figures he had already received there was every indication that there would be a fairly substantial increase in the attendance and consequently the accommodation question at the school was going to be a serious one. In conjunction with the director he was preparing a report which would be submitted to the next meeting of the board. Mr. G. F. Roach considered that the board should point out to the department that it did not want any additions to the present buildings. If they did not do so the department would keep on adding to the buildings and then they would not get a new school at all. Further consideration was deferred till the. next meeting of the board, when the report of the secretary and treasurer will be received.
