HASTINGS LAWN TENNIS CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT. TO BE PRESENTED TO-NIGHT. The annual report of tho Hastings Lawn Tennis Club, which will l>e submitted at tho general meeting to be held in the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club rooms to-night, shows that the membership of the club at the commencement of the season was 316. and at the end of the season was 299. The membership comprises 142 ladies and 108 men on the playing list and 39 ladies and 10 men on the honorary list. The annual club tournament was held towards the end of the season, the following being the winners of the championship events: Ladies singles; Miss Zita Wellwood; men’s singles: Mr. A. I. Rainbow; junior ladies’ singles: Miss Cora Wood; junior men’s singles: Mr. W. J. Hay. The men’s and ladies’ ladder competitions were also kept going throughout the season. The congratulations of the club are extended to Miss Zita Wellwood, the winner of the Ladies’ Club Championship, on her selection as one of the members of the New Zealand representative ladies’ tennis team which visited New South Wales last season, and on her winning the Hawke’s Bay Ladies’ Championship. Two full-sized lawns were allocated for the use of the croquet members of the club during the season, but in view of the fact that the whole of the grounds are now required for the tennis, the croquet members have formed a separate club and there will now be accommodation for 15 tennis courts. The work of preparing the 15 courts for the coming season has been carried out in a very thorough manner during tho winter, and a third 10ft wirenetting fence has been erected behind the courts immediately in front of the pavilion. With regard to finance, the income was £540 15s 9d, and the expenditure including depreciation, was £543 16s. The balance-sheet' therefore shows a loss for the year of £3 0s 3d. The bank overdraft has been considerably increased during the season by reason of non-recurrent expenditure incurred in connection with the erection of wire-netting fencing, purchase of soil, manure, grass-seed, posts and boxes, and extra labour top dressing on account of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championship Tournament, repairs to motor lawn mower, and instalment <»’’ purchase of motor lawn mower. The committee has been successful in arranging with the New Zealand Lawn Tnpnis Association for the holding of the annual New Zealand championship tournament on the chib’s courts next season. It will be played on 26th December and following days, when it is expected that a large number of visitors will he present from all parts of the Dominion. It is hoped that the members of the Club will do their utmost to make the tournament a thorough success, and to ensure that the stay of the visitors will be made as enjoyable as possible. The H.B. Provincial Championship and Eighteenth Hastings Handicap Tournament will be played on the club’s courts immediately after the New Zealand tournament. The thanks of the club are due to Messrs J. A. Fraser, L., A. Denton and G. M. Spence, for their services as honorary auditor, treasurer and secretary respectively, and to the Park Lawn Tennis Club for the loan of plant during the club tournament.
