BASS’S £7,500,000 IN TAXES.
TWENTY TIMES THE DIVIDENDS . In various ways the great brewing firm of Bass, Ratcliff, and Gretton paid £7,573,741 in taxes to the Government last year. This sum, said Colonel John Gretton, M.P., at the meeting of the company, was 15 times the amount of the year’s profit, and more than 20 times the amount ditributed in dividends. He was afraid, said Colonel Gretton, that in faco of such heavy taxation there was very little prospect of being able to make and reduction in beer prices. Beer drinkers, ho added, had much cause to complain of the taxation. Tho balance sheet showed a profit og £546,284, and a dividend of 11 per cent for the year. Tn the preceding year the same dividend was paid on a profit of £595.169.
