Tax On Imports.
THE U.S. TARIFF BILL. TROUBLED PASSAGE IN SENATE. PRESIDENTIAL VETO CERTAIN. (By Cable —Prow Association.—Copyright] Washington, Feb. 15. The position of the tariff is becoming anomalous. The Senate passed amendments putting an eight cent pound duty on butter, 12 cents per dozen on eggs, and 23 per cent, ad valorem on cheese, but the Opposition Democrats still expect ta defeat the measure when it comes to the vote. There is a rumour that twelve Democrats have agreed to join themselves to the Republicans in order to pass the bill, but Senator Underwood declared that President Wilson will unquestionably veto the measure, even if it is passed. The Republicans are now attempting to build up a sufficient majority to pass the bill in the event of President Wilson applying the veto, but owing to the failure to pass the closure, any Senator can talk the measure to death. The session has hardly more than ten days before it must adjourn sine die, so that the fate of the measure is uncertain.—(A. and N.Z.)
