PATANGATA CHILDREN.
CONVEYANCE TO SCHOOL. MEETING AT OTANE. A well-attended public meeting convened by Messrs. Langridge and Cartwright. of Otane. and Allan Dillon, of Patangata, was held in the Town Hall on Saturday night to consider the question of bringing the county children into school or establishing a school at Patangata. Mr. J. J. Langridge was elected chairman, and lie and Mr. Dillon explained the question and what had been done in the matter.
Correspondence was read from the Education Board on the matter, and Mr G. McKay explained the position from the Board's point of view. The names of twenty-nine children were handed in as likely attendants if a suitable convevance could he run for the purpose. It was explainer! that if a school was established at Patangata. it would cost the Board quite £2OO a year to run. and then there was the question of the expense of conveying children living outside the three-mile radius. After thoroughly discussing the question. Messrs. Allan Dillon and Henry Stephenson were appointed a committee to wait on the parents of the children in the Patangata district to get the number of scholars, their ages, and tile distance of each home from Otane, and, if possible, to_ get prices from probable carriers, which will be submitted to the Education Board at its next meeting. This is a matter that wants dealing with promptly, as the majority of children in question are going without their schooling owing to their being unable to travel the long distances required to attend the present schools.
