WAIPAWA WAR MEMORIAL.

(Own Corespondent),

A meeting of the Waipawa War Memorial Committee was held on Wednesday to advance the quest!.. .> of a memorial a further stage. Mr. W. I. Limbrick, presided, and others present were Messrs H. M. Rathbone, W. H. Rathbone, G. Hunt and T. A. Hogg. The secretary, Mr. H. Fletcher, read the correspondence and quotations foi a cluck as was favoured by a referendum of the townspeople and a further letter was read from the Under-Secretary for Internal alfairs, stating (1) that a loan could not be raised for the purpose without a poll of ratepayers; (2) that the Government had not at present any scheme for advancing moneys to local authorities for the purpose; and (3) that the question of whether duty _ would be . charged on imported articles had been referred to the Customs Department. The Mayor said he was not in favour of the loan idea, as only a section of the people would have to pay. He suggested an engineer’s estimate of the probable cost oi erecting the clock tower aqd to lay the information before a public meeting. He considered the cost of clock and tower at not less than £lOOO.

Mr. Hogg said it was so long that the referendum had been taken that the people should be given an opportunity of shewing whether they were prepared to give the proposal practical support. Mr. W. H. Rathbone was adverse to a loan idea as it would be limned to ratepayers. The Memorial should be erected by voluntary effort and considered it would meet with general response. He.favoured ordering the clock immediately, as it would take at least six months to land in the town. After further discussion, it was decided to ask Mr. Climie to furursK an estimate of the cost of erecting the clock tower and obtain information from the Customs Department as regards duty.
