Mr. G. Ebbctt, Mayor df Hastings, has received a letter from M. H. Verbrugghen, conductor of the N'.S.W. Orchestra, in which he thanks His Worship and, through him, the people of Hastings for the many marks of goodwill received by the members of his orchestra during their stay*. He made personal acknowledgment of the Mayor’s personal kindness. .... In the course of his lectureon “Esperanto and International Commerce.” at the Y.M.C -A. Hut ..n Thursday night. Mr. Hodges said that although the telegraph, telephone and aeroplane had as it were, demolished frontiers, the language barrier had not as yet been fully conquered. This was beginning however, for many firms of wongwide reputation were now using Esperanto. Its use for foreign cot re-; spondence does away with the necessity for special foreign correspondence clerks. In the past Ger mans often used to work for nothing to pick up trade secrets. woula save in the cost of foreign price lists and in the publication of books of International interest, often making available tKe literature o' small nations. Braille books printed in Esperanto are available to the blind of the whole world. Had all the soldiers of the Allied armies been given a three months’ course in Esperanto, they would all have been able to converse with ease. Germany made use of Esperanto to disseminate her war news amongst neutrals, and also during the war the U.E.A. (Universal Esperanto Association) with headquarters in Geneva, had rendered splendid »>«*-• vice in tracing missing relatives for all belligerents. Mr. T.
