OBITUARY.

ARTHUR G. CAMPBELL. The news of tbe death of Mr. Arthur Gore Campbell, accountant at the Hastings Branch of tbe Bank of New Zealand, came "in the nature iff a. shock, inasmuch as, although he had pot been in good health for some months, it was only last Tuesday that he had to be removed to a hospital, where, in spite of every attention, he succumbed at about noon yesterday. Deceased gentleman, who was only 45 years of age, and whose people reside In Canterbury, joined the staff of the bank in 1896 and, after serving in several districts over the South Island, he went to Feilding, whence he was promoted to the Hustings office, as an accountant, in 1914. During his residence in Hastings he earned the esteem of all who came in contact with him, in both his official and his private capacities. He took a/ deep interest in tbe Legion of Frontiersmen, in the Hastings Squadron of which ho held the rank of Lieutenant, and hia enthusiasm contributed in no small degree to the esprit de corps which has kept that body together as. an active unit. During the outbreak of the influenza epidemic in 1918, when that malady claimed so many victims, the late Mr. Campbell was one of those who came forward and assisted in every way in the organisation* to fight the disease, and he proved himself a most devoted worker. Owing to the state of deceased gentleman’s health, he had to bbtffin sick leave from hi_s_ bank last October and be has been failing since. He leaves a widow and a young family, the eldest being about tan, to mourn his death and the deepest sympathy is i extended to them in the affliction which has befallen them. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning, when a Requiem Mass will be celebrated in the Catholic Church, at 9 a.m.. and, at 10, the procession will proceed to the Havelock N. cemetery, where the remains will be laid to rest. Another death, the news of which was received in Hastings with sincere sorrow, was that of Mr. Herbert Trabarne Rees, manager of the Hastings branch of the National Bank, which took place yesterday. Deceased has not been in good health for about a month and, his condition getting worse, he was sent to a hospital for an operation a week ago. However, despite • the best medical skill, his condition grew worse and he passed away as stated. Deceased’s family are well known and highly respected in Greymouth, and through the West Coast, where deceased gentleman was Engaged for, many years as accountant in the .National Bank. He also filled the position of accountant at the Napier branch, whence he was transferred to the charge of the Hastings branch, a position which be has held for the past two years, during which time he has been highly respected and held in general esteem. The flag at the bank is floating halfmast, as a mark Of respect to the memory of deceased. He leaves a widow to mourn bis death, and with whom sincere sympathy is expressed. The funeral will leave St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, to-morrow afternoon, at 2.30, for the Havelock North cemetery.
