THE WAIKAREMOANA SCHEME. WANTED BY WELLINGTON. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the new Central Progress League, at Wellington on Tuesday, and referring to hydro-electrics, Mr. J. P. Luke (Mayor of Wellington) said “the supply of current that would be supplied to Wellington from the Mangahao scheme would not be sufficient for ordinary -a domestic purposes; the supply would not equal the demand until such time as Lake Waikaremoana was harnessed.” Mr. Luke added “The Wellington City Council had seen the difficulty with which it would be faced in the near future and had ordered a steam-power plant, so that the tram and service® would be maintained. There was great work to be done by a Progress League and the sooner it got to it the better for Wellington. We Suggest that the East Coast League gets into, close touch with the Mayor of Wellington and the Central Progress League (on the provisional committee of which are Messrs. W. H- Field, R. A. Wright, and Colonel MiteheH, M’s.P.) with a view to making concerted effort to awaken the Government to the vital necessity of immediately proceeding with the Waikaremoana hydro-electric scheme. >
