GREAT NORTHERN DERBY. RACE DESCRIBED. The Grea'- Northern Derby, which is now looked upon as the premier classic race of the Dominion, has provided many surprises in the past, and still another one has to be recorded in the history of the race When the numbers were framed for the forty-sixth Derby run on .New Year’s Day, it was found that Sir Geo. Clifford was relying on Royal Stag and Mr. Al McDonald on Rose Wreath, while the Auckland horses Archie and Canowindra were also on hand to oppose. Rossini. The defectio of Affectation caused some disappointment, for he was generally sorted out as.the most likely to bring about the defeat of Rossini. The favourite went down well in his preliminary, and he was looked upon as unbeatable, and so strong did the money come for him that when the grand total was made up it was seen that of the ten thousand eight hundred odd pounds invested Rossini had been entrusted with £7750 10/-, which is easily the record am&unt yet invested on a single horse in the Dominion. Archie was the only other horse to go over double figures, the order of the others being Royal Stag, Rose Wreath and Canowindra. Rose Wreath quickly shot to the front from an even start, and was striding* along nicely when they passed the stand, the favourite and Royal Stag being last, although it was evident as they went along the back that Rose \\ reath was not going to be allowed to get far away, for Canowindra and Archie moved up closer to her as they went through the cutting, while Deeley 'kept Rossini handy and Young was getting a nice run on the rails with Royal Stag. Running to the home I turn, Gray moved on Archie evidently with the intention of getting a break on Rossini, but his mount was not equal of sustaining the effort. As they swept into the straight Rose Wreath was a length in front ot Canowindra, Archie and Rossini, with Royal Stag hugging the rails a couple of lengths away. At the lawn rails Rossini was hard at it to head Rose Wreath, white for the first time it was seen that Royal btag was threatening danger. Against Rose M reath .Deeley was content to ride Rossini with his hands and heels, but looking across to the inside saw Royal Stag coming along with a strong run, and he then drew his whip. The colt, however, swerved when the pressure was applied, and Royal Stag sustained his final run won amidst great excitement by three parts of a length. Rose Wreath was third. Royal Stag’s victory was the fourth Sir George Clifford has scored in the event. Husbandman winning in 1909, Kirriwinning m 1910, Counterfoil in 1912, and Royal Stag this year. The win with Royal Stag came as great a surprise to Sir Geo. Clifford as tc the public, and it was doubly pleasing to him inasmuch as he not only bred Royal Stag, but also bred his sire and dam, a somewhat unique record.
