CITY BEAUTIFICATION.

INTERESTING SCHEME. At a special meeting of the Napier Borough Council held last evening, the following scheme, proposed by a special sub-coinmittie, Messis Wright and Mulvanah for beautifying the Napier South streets, was carried: —

For all streets other than Kennedy road, and those two short portions of Jull and Morris streets leading into Nelson Park which are H chains wide :—Streets 1 chain wide (60rt) we suggest 24 feet of permanent roadway, with 10 feet lootpaths either side, which will thereiore leave It feet either side for planting and grassing. M e suggest lime, plane, silver birch and oak trees be planted .15 feet from- the fence line in all streets not already planted, and that as much as possible be undertaken this season, and immediately. Kennedy road, which is 11 chains wide (99ft), we suggest 36 feet road, 1C feet footpath either side, wnich leaves 211 feet either side for planting and grassing, vve suggest that line of trees already planted be. left in position, and all those which i have “passed out” be replaced. I Veorge’s Drive, which is 2 chains i wide (132 it we suggest a 30 fool ’ road, 10 feet footpaths, 10 feet grass ‘ plot either side roadway. On river i side we suggest a 15 foot avenue of , trees, a 42 toot belt of shrubs plant- > ed on a slope leading down to a 15 foot river promanade, which should : be one foot above highwater level on .the principle of the scheme of be.nutifyiiig Kingtton-on-Tliames, Lngi iand. I Munro street, in front of St. Patrick’s Church and Technical School, we suggest laying cut in grass plots with laburnums as the trees select' d ' for planting. From Station street to Hastings street (on railway side) we < suggest 10 foot pathway with a 15 foot avenue of trees.
