THE DOMINION. j SEAPLANE SIGHTED. BY WANGANUI LADIES. Wanganui, Aug. 12. While looking out to sea from the window of a house on the hillside this afternoon, two ladies saw what they declare was an aeroplane. They bad time to get binoculars and go on to the verandah before the visitor disappeared behind the Landguard Bluff. It came from the west and disappeared in the south. The de- ( scription of the craft points to it being a seaplane. The ladies mentioned seem to have been the only observers, but they are quite confident they were not mistaken. ; MERELY A FLOCK OF BLACK ■ SWANS. ; Wanganui, Aug. 13. Further investigations re the alleged aeroplane along the sea coast last night, discounts the assumption that the object was an aeroplane. A more reasonable and generally accepted theory is that a flock of black swans was-mistaken for an aeroplane as a flock of birds was seen the previous night at the same time and flying in the same direction. WAR WORN SOLDIERS. DUE TO ARRIVE SHORTLY. Base records issued on Saturday the nominal roll of one officer, one nurse and 152 N.C.O.’s. and men returning to New Zealand in Draft 172. Following are the names of the Hawke’s Bay men: — Beagley, F.. Napier. Mason, E. P., Hastings. Palmer, H. N., Napier. Taylor, A. A., Hastings. Woodley, J., Hastings. j COALMINERS’ DISPUTE. STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER Auckland, Aug. 13. A request that the Government should intervene in the dispute between the coal mine owners association and the miners’ federation was made to the Hon. W. D. S. . MacDonald by a deputation from the national executive of the Federation of Labor. Tne Minister sai 1 that Government intended to see that there was no exploitation by the owners of mines of tne men. He admitted that consumers were pay. I ing a high price for coal, but he was not able to say if the middleman was making an excessive profit. The Board of Trade, with tne assistance of an expert, was ar present inquiring into this particular matter. The Minister assured the deputation of his sympathy and said he was hopeful that something would yet be done to avert a dislocation of the industry.' i N.Z. WHEAT SUPPLIES. j ANOTHER TWO MILLION | BUSHELS BOUGHT. j Auckland, August 12. The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald announces that a further 2,000,000 bushels of wheat have been piurchased in Australia on the same terms, namely' a bushel, as those upon which 2.000,000 busheis were purchased last month. The New Zealand Government provides shipp for transport, tne wheat being delivered f.o.b. in Australia. One shipment is already on the way an 1 should arrive in Auckland in a few days, and further freights have been arranged at intervals without inter tearing with the intercolonial carry ing services. j As to the wheat production of the ' Dominion, the Minister says the winter sowing had been far less than last year, and a smaller sparing sowing is also expected. Farmers had been unfortunate in the past three years in getting low y’ields, but 'f the average during the coming season was 28 or 30 bushels an acre, this, with the addition of a million bushels from Australia half-yearly, would assure a supply of wheat fot the Dominion, the requirements of which were 500,000 bushels monthly for flour purposes and 100,000 bushels for other purposes. In a few davs the minimum price of 6/v with a free market, will be gazetted as the amount- fixed for the coming season’s wheat. So far as t.ie inter pretation of "free market” stands Mr. Macdonald says that the Government has no idea of prejudicing a reasonable market price, and what ever was a fair market price over and above 6/4, the Government will be prepired to pay to farmers. [A cable from Melbourne dated Monday, 10.40 p.m. states, thatSenator Russell states that the reported sale of two million bushels of wheat to New Zealand has not yet taken place.] VARIOUS FUNDS.
