ADDITIONAL COOL STORAGE.

SOUTH CANTERBURY ARRANGEMENTS.

Timaru, August 10. A fortnight ago a meeting of fanners considered a suggestion by Mr. E. C. Studholme that to help, the farmers they should ask the freezing companies to erect addi tional storage at the Smithfield and Pareora works, the farmers to provide the capital required. Objection was made that only those providing capital would be detailed to the space, and that it would be bet ter to allow companies to erect and the farmers to pay extra for storage A committee was appointed to see the companies on the matter. This committee reported to a large meeting to-day that the New Zealand Company disapproved of the extra storage idea, and recommended concentrating on getting shipfping. The Canterbury Company offered to ad f shorage at Pareora if the farineis found £ 1,500 this month, the space to belong to the subscribers pro Vita until after the war, when th» building would become the property of the company. At to-day's meeting a letter from the New Zealand Company reversed the earlier decision. The company will erect at Smithfield additional storage for at least 100,000 without assistance and without any condi tions, and carry on as heretofore on full trade lines. This was fully approved by the meeting, and it was decided to ask the Canterbury Company to adopt the same line. , It was stated that the Shipping Committee would not send meat ships to Timaru, and a resolution was passed urging that ships be sent, as there are three freezing works within the radius of the port.
