REINFORCEMENT SHORTAGES. DOMINION FIGI BES. NUMBER OF BALLOI'TED MEN REQUIRED. tPMR PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, Feb. 5. The ballot to fill the shortages in the '27th and Reinforcement? began to-day. The following tables show the quotas required from the various recruiting districts for the 27th and 28th Reinforcements, the number of voluntary recruits secured for each and the shortages required to be supplied by the ballot from anions the members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve : — 27th REINFORCEMENTS. .

This is the first occasion upon m hich Ihe whole of the recruiting districts throughout the Dominion arc called upon to make up the balance of their quotas by ballot. MILITARY APPEAL BOARD. (PER PUESS ASSOCIATION.} Wellington, Feb. 6. At the Military Appeal Board, Matthew Boyd Guise, brass finisher, appeared on the ground that hie caning up would be contrary to public interest. Fie was the partner of a brass moulder. Counsel pointed out that there was a distinct shortage of brass workers. Guise and his partner were engaged in military • work under contract, and also did important brass work in connection with milking and shearing machines and milk vats. A contract had been entered into which will take nine months to complete. The board adjourned the appeal until 22nd April, conditionally on every endeavour being made meanwhile to replace appellant.

DEPARTURE FROM NAPIER.

There was a large attendance at the Xapier Railway Station this morning to bid au-revoir to members of the 26th Reinforcements who departed for camp by mail train this morning. Members of the National Reserve formed the usual guard of honour, and both N apier and City Bands were in attendance. The Mayor, Mr. J. V. Brown, M.P.. addressed the men. and hearty cheei-s were given for them on all sides.

The men were in charge of Lieut. Le Quesne (Hastings), and Sergeant Major S. M. Edwards (Napier). As the train steamed out, the bands struck up “Auld Lang Syne” and midst the sounding of whistles and hearty wishes and cheers, the men were hastened off to “do their bit.”
