McKinnon, of Arapawanui, who has been visiting Napier, returned home on Saturday. Mrs. Davis Caning of Oakbourne, Waipukurau, has returned home after a visit to Napier. Miss E. Jenkins was a passenger by the mail train this morning for Wellington. Mrs. A. McKee, who has been on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Ryan, Hastings, returned to Wellington this morning. Miss Hanhan (soprano) has been engaged to sing at the Hastings Orchestral Concert on Wednesday next. Mr. and Mrs. A. Loudoun, of Napier, who have been on a visit to Australia, returned home on Saturday. Inspector O’Donovan, of Wellington, is mentioned in police circles as the probable successor to Mr Cullen as Commissioner. Messrs. J. H. Sheath, chairman, of the Education Board, and Major G. Crawshaw. secretary, returned to Napier from Gisborne by boat this morning after paying a round of visits to schools in the northern districts. The “N.Z. Tinies” reports that, the Rev. Father Barry, C.S.S.R., of St. Gerard’s, who for some time past has been in ill health, took a rather serious turn on Thursday, and his condition is causing his friends anxiety. Captain Leo Myers, formerly of Auckland, who was in the trenches in France for several months as an officer in the King’s Royal Rifles, was invalided to London recently. He has now recovered sufficiently to he able to take a position on the instruction staff in England. Mr. James Ha vert y, General Manager for Australia for the Victoria Insurance Co., Mr. J. Edgar, manager for New Zealand, Mr. Henry Harner. Inspector for New Zealand, arrived in Napier by the mail train on Saturday, and in company with Mr. E. S. G. Harrison. Napier manager, left by rar yesterday for Taupo, Rotorua and Auckland. Mr. Sydney Wyatt. foreman of Mr J. Garnett’s factory, proceeds to camp next week ns a member of the 23rd Reinforcements. At the office to-day. Mr. W. Garnett made a presentation. on behalf of the firm, of a service wristlet watch, suitably engraved., to mark his employers’ appreciation of IS) years’ service. Mr. Wyatt is the first member of the staff to enlist for active service. Dlr. G. H. Kershaw, son of Mr. W. Kershaw, Hastings, has been accepted by Commander Armstrong, of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Patrol for Motor Boat Service, and leaves for Wellington this week.
