Local and General.

The practice of riding cycles on the footpaths at Taradale is becoming quite common, and several pedestrians have narrowly escaped being knocked down “Professor” W. Y. who for a considerable time was prominent in labour in New Zealand circles, is, according to the latest American exchanges, one of the Californian candidates for the Senate of the United States.

The Hastings District High School Drum and Fife Band, under the conductorship of Mr. A. A. George rendered a very enjoyable programme of music on the balcony of the Grand Hotel on Saturday night. The band has wonderfully improved of late, and their playing is now quite a credit to the conductor and themselves.

The shop conducted by the Napier branch of the Women’s National Reesrve did fairly good business on Saturday. The shop itself was under thf management of Mrs. W. Sweetapple and Mrs S. Jewett, while the following ladies kindly lent their assistance for the day:— Miss Ashton, assistant to Mrs. W. Sweetapple and Mrs. S. Jowett in the shop; Mesdames G. Wills and Spratt, flower stall, assisted by Misses Kenny, Topp, Strangman, Marrett, Wolstenholme, Harris, McPherson, and Morland. The cattle sale at Mangawhare on Tuesday was (says the “Wairoa Bell)” a great disappointment to sellers, as buyers were very shy and so far from the expectations of a rise in prices being realised, there was quite a tendency in the other direction. So much so, indeed, that a large portion of the approximately 1,000 head of stock yarded was passed in, and what sales were made were practically the result of negotiations after the hammer fell. It is scarcely possible to give any prices for this reason.

The woather at Napier last evening was superb. It was an ideal evening in fact, consequently enormour crowds turned out to enjoy the concert given on the Marine Parade by the Napier City Band. The programme was a delightful one, and included a choice, selection from Tschaikowsky. Many visitors were present, and one of these, who enjoyed the music from the balcony of the Alasonic Hotel, remarked to a “Tribune” reporter: “This scene (pointing to the ocean, the parade and the crowds), w’ith the sea rolling in, the moonlight and the band, is one of the finest things in New’ Zealand.”

The school concert to be given by the pupils of the Taradale-Green-meadow’s school, on Friday, 10th inst., at the Taradale Town Hall, promises to be as pronounced a success as last year. An excellent programme of choruses, monologues dialogues, tableaux, drills and humorous sketches in character, has been arranged, and patrons may expect quite, a treat. Even the infants w’ill have a large representation on the stage and for that reason it has been decided to commence at 7.30 p.m. Doors will be open at 7 p.m.

Attention is directed to the advertisement in to-day’s issue announcing that a smoke concert will be held at the Oddfellows' Hall, Hastings, on Friday, November 17th., the proceeds from which will be devoted to aid Mrs. Maggin. widow of porter Alaggin, who lost his life whilst shunting at the Hastings railway yards recently. A strong committee of railwaymen has been set up and every effort is being made to ensure the success of the concert at which a splendid programme w’ill be provided. Tickets at 2/6 each are now’ available from any member of the Hastings Railway staff and no doubt the public will generously support the men’s endeavour to give substantial assistance to the widow, who, owing to the loss of her breadwinner, is left with a young family in circumstances calculated to cause her financial anxiety. The management of Everybody’s Theatre has received a wire from the Co-operative Film Co. that they have secured the rights to a number of new Chaplin films, the first of which, “His Ambition,” will be shown at Everybody’s on Wednesday next.* Car Owners!
