THE MARDI GRAS.

The executive of the Napier Thirty Thousand Club being impressed with the movement now under way to establish a Maternity Ward in Napier, have decided to support it by contribut : ing the net proceeds of the “Mardi Gras” to the funds. It is felt that such a ward is very necessary, and. a< all money raised for this object xviti carry a Government subsidy of twentyfour shillings in the pound, all efforts to bring about a successful result will doubtless receive the public’s hearty support. The “Mardi Gras” will, this year, introduce further new features prominent amongst which will be a Baby Show. Such an event has never vet been held in connection with the people’s festival, and the innovation is expected to prove very popular. Following along the idea of juvenile attractions several hundred children will give exhibitions of fancy drill and Hag formations. These items are ver,' spectacular, and when presented in other cities have been enthusiastically received. It is also intended to carry the idea of juvenile displays into the Boxing Day procession, and a special section has been created for the exhibit of illustrations of well known nursery rhymes in tableau form. The adoption of this lends itself to spectacular results above the ordinary at a very small cost. Other features in connection with this year’s festival will be announced from time to time.
