DANNEVIRKE.

(Own Correspondent.) Mr. Donald Mackenzie and family who are among the oldest residents of Dannevirke, left by the Express to-day for Manganahoe where he has purchased a property. Mr. Len Breakwell, of Ngapaeruru, has purchased Mr. Mackenzie’s farm of 250 acres just outside the Borough. Mr. Mackenzie will be greatly missed, especially in connection with the A. and P. Association, of which he is an ex-president, and one of the original promotors and supporters of the Society. He was also for years Chieftain of the Dannevirke Highland Society. , Lieut-Col. J. G. Hughes, D. 5.0., C.M.G., who has returned from the front, is spending a few days in Dannevirke, visiting 'his sister and looking up old acquaintances. In an interesting conversation he had much to relate about his experiences and from appearances has had a pretty strenuous time. At the meeting of the South School Committee one of the members, the Rev. Nicholas, made some strong complaints about the sanitary condition of the school and generally condemned the way the grounds were kept. I am told he might find it difficult to substantiate all the charges he made, however, he has aroused the committee into action and awakened them to a sense of their responsibilities. Building permits to the value of £2175 were issued by the Borough Council last month.
