WAR RELIEF FUNDS. £50,000.000 SUBSCRIBED IN* TWO YEARS. x ISTHMIAN AND N.Z CABLE ASSN. (Received!,l2.3o p.m.) London,. Oct. 31. A total of £50,000,000 has been subscribed for war charity during the first two years of the war, including the subscriptions from the dominions and colonies. This total includes £20,000,000 for relief of distress and the re-establishment of men returning to civil life. £6,000,000 for sick and wounded. £6,000,000 for comforts, and £10,000,000 for the Allies. The Prince of Wales national fund now totals £6,000,000, whereof threefifths have been spent, chiefly- in meeting soldiers’ allowances, whereof the War Office has delayed payment.

In his address of welcome he said, “We have met not without formality to deliberate on matters affecting your order, and to assist the Government in the solution of the important problems.” Alluding to the war the Viceroy said: “Your Highnesses have stood forth as true pillars of the Empire. By giving personal service in the field and lavish contributions of men money and materials, you have earned a place in the hearts of the British people which will remain for all time.” The Galkwar of Baroda, replying, emphasised the desire of all the ■chiefs to do everything possible for the Empire. He’ expressed their unflinching loyalty and deep attachment to the King Emperor. 22nd REINFORCEMENTS. DEFICIENCY STILL SERIOUS. Wellington, Nov. 1. About 100 men have arrived in camp to make good the shortage, leaving a deficiency of 750. The seriousness of the position is emphasised.
