SUPREME COURT.

Christchurch, Oct. 31. Hugh Charles Graham was charged with the manslaughter of John Finlay on September 30th. An alternative charge of assault was preferred. The alleged offences, it was stated for the Crown, arose out of an altercation in a hotel between prisoner and another man. Finlay intervened and it was alleged that he was struck by Graham. On proceeding home Finlay collapsed in the street his head striking the pavement and he died. Prisoner denied that he struck Finlay but said he threw deceased from him and he reeled back into a chair. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on both charges. James Alfred Smith was found guilty of uttering a cheque and was sentenced to twelve months’ gaol.
