Corporal W. Chuck, of Trentham camp, is spending a short leave in Napier. Mr. and Mrs. J. Nairn, of Waiptkurau, arrived in Napier last evening on a visit. Dr. and Mrs. Wilkin motored through to Napier from 'Wanganui yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Warren, who have been visiting Napier, have returned ! to Hastings. i Miss Byrne, who has been visiting Napier, left this morning on her return to Wairoa. Miss Doris Shirley, who has been on a short visit to Wellington, returned to Napier last evening. Surgeon-Major J. P. Leahy, who has been visiting Napier, returned to Trentham by to-day’s mail train, j Mrs. C. E. Tattersall and Miss Tivth Tattersall. of Napier, are at pi esent visiting Rotorua. Mr. C. Marriott, of the Hastings railway department, left by this morning’s express on transfer to Lower Hutt. Mr. J. Miss Dorothy Robinson has re turned to Hastings after a lengthy stay at her country residence ir Napier. Mrs. J. H. Monteith and Miss Mary Monteith left Hastings this morning for Wellington, en route for England. Mrs. J. A. Macdonell left Hastings by the mail train this morning for Wellington, where she joins the Rotorua for England. Stephenson (Palmerston North), Mr. Simson (Auckland). A Sydney cable reports the death o f the Rev. Peter Dodds McCorn.ich. official precentor-general of the Presbyterian Assembly in the Commonwealth. and composer of “Advance Australia Fair.” Miss Spencer, of Rissington, who i- about to leave for England to take up war work, has been presented with many tokens of esteem from the residents’ work society and Sunday school. She will be greatly missed by her numerous friends. The Hon. G. AV. Russell, Minister for Internal Affairs, arrived in Hastings yesterday, and after meeting a deputation from the Plunket Nurse Society, was shown over the new Municipal Buildings by the Mayor. The Minister left for Wellington this morning. The death occurred in the Gisborne Hospital of Mr. Charles Hill man, of Tuparoa, aged 101 years. He came to New Zealand many years ago, and was in the employ of the Williams family for over 30 years.

During the Victoria’s last trip to Sydney the chief engineer, James Sales was missed. It is believed that he fell overboard during the night. He had recently been suffering from insomnia.— Press Association. Mr. E. L. Commin, of the legal firm of Cornford, Commin and Cornford, Hastings, has been accepted for service on the hospital ship Marama. and leaves here on Thursday morning for Wellington. The Hastings branch of business of the firm will be carried on as usual during Mr. Commin’s absence. Mr. R. T. Bailey, formerly of Napier, where he was well known as one of the most energetic meinb<rs of the Hawke’s Bay Union, and who is now attached to the head office of the Labour Department at Wellington, is at present in Nanier, where be is acting as relieving officer io that department. Mr. and Mre. W. P. Bowden, of Nuhaka, have decided to take up their permanent residence in Hastings, Mr. Bowden having purchased Mr. Wake’s farm, Norton road. They both made themselves extremely popular at Nuhaka by their genial disposition and high integrity and will be acquisitions to Hastings.

A Wairoa Press Association message states that Dr. Gordon, who set vp practice here recently and was on the visiting staff at the hospital, died suddenly about noon. He was educated in Scotland and acted for a time as nssis'.ant at Troon, Avis’ire. He was u arried recently. He h d a slight ' eart seizure yesterday and collapsed suddenly to-day.
