Sergeant Dick McGreevy, a returned soldier, invalided, is booked to arrive in AVaipawa this evening (Friday), and I understand a hearty reception will be accorded him. Mrs. W. Ireland received a cable from her son AA’altcr on Thursday, advising her of his safe arrival in Loudon where he goes into a hospital as result of wounds received in France. Mr. Rupert Pot-hrick received a cable on Thursday that his brother-in-law, Dug Thodey, was killed in action on October 3rd. Dug was very popular and his death is much regretted. Owing to the boisterous weather tho AVaipawa Brass Band. Society were unable to submit their promised programme of music last evening, but weather permitting, this will be given on Saturday evening next in the main (street. Mrs. Dr. Todd has donated a special prize for soldiers’ knitting exhibits at the Patriotic flower and industries show next month. Miss Todd has donated a special prize of a guinea to be alloted by the committee.

Some time ago an agitation was afoot in the sister township for AA’aipukurau to be the distributing centre for the mail services to Onga Onga and Tikokino, and after making a personal investigation of the, routes and hearing the views of the settlers interested a report was submitted by the chief postmaster, Air. Northcroft, to head quarters. As a result the following letter has been received from the' Assistant Secretary of the Postal Department: —“Referring to my letter of the 7th of July last, in the matter of the proposal to substitute AVaipukurau for AVaipawa as the starting Blace8 lace for the mail services to Onga nga and Tikokino, I have the honour, by direction, to inform you that it has been decided to maintain the present route during the ensuing mail contract- term of two years.” . Saturday (to-morrow), is Red Cross Day at the Patriotic shop, which will be in charge of Mesdames Bert AVhitc, Jas. Bibby and D. McLean.
