HASTINGS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
WRITING COMPETITION. Writing competitions, under the direction of the British Empire Rhyming Trades Alphabet Company, were recently carried out in the schools of the Hastings district, and the results thereof are just announced from Wellington. The competitions have the approval of the Education Department, and the Hawke’s Bay work was judged by" the secretary of the Hawke’s Bay’ Education Board, Major; G. Crawshaw, whose awards for the Hastings Schools were as follows: — Standards 3 and 4- —Len Vogtherr, Hastings D.H.S., 1; Francis Sheffield, Hastings D.H.S., 2; William Cecil Carr, Hastings D.H.S., 3 ; Alfred Clark, Hastings D.H.S., 4; L. Francis Horne, Hastings D.H.S., 5; Ernest J. Hunt, Hastings D.H.S., 6; Gertrude <T. Stanley, Hastings North School, 7. Standards 5 to 7 —Gertrude Murray, Hastings D.H.S., 1; Alice Lys, Hastings D.H.S., 2; Sybil Butler, Hastings D.H.S., Nerissa Mummery, Hastings D.H.S., 1; Geraldine Stead, Hastings D.H.S., 5; Grace Cameron, Hastings D.H.S., 6; Mabel Sturm, Hastings D.H.S.. 7; Daisv McKeesick, Hastings D.H.S., 8. In addition to tfie above, the first in each competition, L. Vugtherr and Gertrude Murray, received Lockyer’s _ special prize. All the winners, with one exception, are pupils of the Hastings District High School, the headmaster and staff of which are especially complimented b.y the manager of the firm conducting the contests.
