Otane was en fete to-day (Monday) when Mr. and Airs. Alfred Dillon celebrated their golden wedding. The “afternoon” was held in the Town Hall, where over two hundred guests were entertained, visitors being present from nil parts of the district. Air. and Airs. Dillon were also the recipients of sheaves of telegrams and complimentary letters from all parts of the Dominion, among them being a “round robin” signed by 22 members of the Legislature. all old associates of Mr. Dillon. The following is the text of the message,: — Alfred Dillon, Esq., Dear Sir, —We, your old associates and friends, send you hearty greetings on the occasion of your golden wedding. We sincerely hope that the future will he filled with many years of health and prosperity for Airs. Dillon and yourself.”
With this was also sent gold pin and an inscribed gold cigar holder. The guests were entertained by songs contributed by Mrs. Edwards and M iss McKay and instrumental music by Mrs. J. O’Reilly and Mr. Broadley. Complimentary speeches were made, by the Rev. Davidson, who prosed the health of the bridal pair, which was drunk with musical honours, Canon Eccles, Mr. J. V. Brown, M.P., Messrs. A. E. .lull, H. Hickey, >S. McGreevy, G. McKay, IL Evans, J. 0. Taylor, J. Higgins, J. J. Langridge, and P. J. Sefton.
Mr. Jull, on behalf of the guests present, presented Mr. and Airs. Dillon with a very massive, and handsome silver flower epergne, to which was attached a gold plate with the following inscription: Presented to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dillon by their Otane friends on the occasion of their golden wedding. Aug. 9, 1915. Mr. Dillon’s reply was received with continuous .applause. The speaker referred particularly to the great help and assistance that Mrs. Dillon had been to him. ‘ She toad been more than a wife ; she had been a pal,” always helping and never hindering. The guests were lavishly entertained by the members of Air. Dillon’s family, of whom there were 39 present, anil in the evening the festivities were culminated with a dance. The hall was very prettily decorated by friends and relations, who spared n<i effort to secure the great success the event deserved.
