THE STAFF SAFE. (Received 21, 10.45 a.m.) Sydney, Sept. 24. 'rhe Pacific Cable Board reports that the Fanning Island staff are safe. CABLE MANAGER RECEIVES NEWS. STATION NOT TOTALLY DESTROYED. Auckland, Sept. 24. Mr. Milward, manager of the Pacific Cable Board, confirms the report that Fanning Island staff are safe, but regretted that he was unable to reveal further details of news which had come through from the station owing to Government re st rictions. There is reason for believing that the- station has not been totally destroyed. It is reported that although some damage has been done, the. buildings on the island are more or less intact, while' the fact that the staff is still on the island suggests that efforts will be made to repair the damage as quickly as possible.
