PRACTICAL PATRIOTISM. SUGGESTIONS.
TO THE EDITORSir,—l think if all the workers of Hawke’s Bay did their little bit towards a fund for our contingent a nice sum would soon be raised. I suggest that all domestic workers, station hands and others that are “found” be asked to contribute one week's wages, shop assistants, office hands and those having to pay board, half a week’s wage, and married men one-third. The staff here, consisting of three maids and a rouseabout is prepared to lead the way, their combined week’s wage being £1 2/-.— I am, etc., (MISS) MILDRED KINGABY. Hastings, Aug. 11.
TO THK KDITOH
Sir. -As Britishers we pride ourselves on our cool, calm nature, in strong contrast to the excitability of other nations. I would suggest that, instead of tin-kettling, a parade be organised in the town of all those who have served in the army, navy, volunteers, or other branches of the service. Such a demonstration, properly organised, would do much to inspire the young with patriotism, set an example to others, and show what a reserve of strength was to be found in every part of the Dominion. —I am, etc., W.H.W. Hastings, Aug. 12.
