WAIPUKURAU

[OWN CORRESPONDENT. I Bishop Sedgwick, Bishop of Wai apu, paid his first visit to Waipukurau on Sunday. There was a very large attendance at St. Mary’s Church at morning service, when the Bishop preached a sermon on the “Love of God.” In the evening a confirmation service was held, when the church was crowded, numbers of people not being able to gain admission. Twenty-three were confirmed and the ceremony was most impressive. The Bishop was assist ed at both services by lhe vicar, the Rev. A. W. Stace. A united service was held in the Town Hall on Sunday afternoon. The assemblage joined heartily in the singing led by the combined church choirs. The Bishop of Waiapu delivered a striking address, and referred at length to the present European crisis, and spoke of the horrors of war, of which he had experience in the Soudan. Rev. N. O. White and Rev. Stace and Captain Waltingly also spoke. Father Bergen was unable to be present.

Mr. A. Leigh Hunt moved at the ■Wellington Central Chamber ol commerce on Monday, that: “In view of the grave financial national conflict, it is" highly desirable that every patriotic citizen of the Dominion should, both in his private and public capacity, practise and advocate extreme thrift as an essential means of assisting the nation by providing for the distress that must inevitably follow.” Mr. Hunt said that he did not wish to cry panic, but he believed that hard times were in store, and that everyone should now be particularly thrifty. Those who did not need the result of their thrift for their own families would probably encounter others who needed aid. The motion was. carried unanimously. ‘ .
