ELECTION OF HAWKE’S BAY DELEGATE.

MR. E. AVERILL APPOINTED.

A meeting of delegates of the agricultural and pastoral societies in the Hawkp’s Bay and Poverty Bay districts was held in Napier yester-. day for the purpose of electing a representative to the New Zealand Board of Agriculture. Mr. T. H. Lowry presided. The delegates present were: Messrs. G. Hunter, M.P , H. A. Russell (H.B/ Society), E. Averill and L. C. Rathbone (Danne-~ virke) H. Gaisford (Bush Districts), John Jamieson (Poverty Bav>. Mr. Hunter also represented the Waipukurau Society. Wairoa was not represented. Mr. G. Hunter proposed the election of Mr. E. Averill as the representative for the.Hawke’s Bay district on the board. Mr. Averill was the post suitable man. having h-~d •considerable experience in the. man agement of small farms and large estates, which was the one essential qualification. Mr. Averill had other necessary qualifications to sit on the boaqdi in so far as he has occupied a small farm in the neighbourhood of Dannevirke. He had won the respect and approval of everyone in the district in which he resided. He was sure that as their representative he would make representations to the Government that would be ; n the interests of the agricultural and pastoral industries throughout the Dominion.

Mr. John Jamieson endorsed Mr. Hunter’s remarks, and seconded the nomination Mr. Rathbone said Mr. Averill was fully qualified to occupy the im - portant position. Not only did he understand agricultural and pas toral pursuits, but he knew a great deal apout scientific farming, especially in regard to the use of manures.

The motipn was carried unanimously. In returning thanks for his election, Mr. Averill said it would always be his endeavour to represent the interests of the societies and also those of the farming community generally. New markets were constantly being opened, and this country should seek new markets. He would welcome suggestions. On behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Society, Mr. Lowry congratulated Mr. Averin on his election. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Charles Douglas for the time he had expended in connection with the election.

Mr. Averill is a native of Stafford. England, and arrived in the Dornin ion dose on 30 years ago. He was engaged in farming pursuits in the Waikato district for a* number of years and was assistant manager to the Superintendent of the Manga toro Assets Board (Mr. John Me Call) for five years. When thia estate was subdivided Mr. Averill was appointed manager of a large portion of the estate, a position he held for four years. He then took up a bush covered section in the Ngapaeruru block, near Dannevirke. and as proof of his industry the land to-day is all cleared and carrying sheep and cattle.. Some five and a half years ago he was one of the prime movers for the establishment of an A. and P. Society in Dannevirke, and to-day he is its president. It may be mentioned that Mr. Averill is a of the Bishop cf Auckland.
