LOSS OF BRITISH STEAMER. \ CREW* AND PASSENGERS PERISH. Constantinople, March 8. The English steamer Kalvados trading locally was lost in the sea of Marmora a week ago. Loss of life was at. the time officially denied, but it, is now admitted that the crew and 200 passengers perished. S.S. TURAKINA. UNDERWRITERS LOSE £300,000. Rio de Janeiro, March 8. The Turakina has four feet of water in the No. 4 hold. The meat in No. 2 is >useless, and the cheese in No. 3 valueless. The underwriters’ losses on the Turakina are now estimated at £300,000. The water has reached the wool. WRECK OF T-HE RED PINE. CREW’S NARROW ESCAPE. Nelson, March 9. The steamer Arahura brought to Nelson yesterday the crew of the steamer Red Pine, which was wrecked on Cape Stephens on Friday night, two miles from the scene of the wreck of the Jane Douglas about two years ago. Captain Eden states that he ran into a fog, but could not see bush fires on Durville Island, and set a course which he thought would take the vessel safely past. Suddenly, however, she struck a rock and sank so quickly that the crow had barely time to get away :is fbt'.V stood. Only one boat could be launched. It stood by till daylight. ami then made for shore, where the castawavs were hospitably treated by the settlers.
