ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.
A PRINTER LOSES HIS
FINGERS.
A serious accident of a very painful nature befel a young man named Onslow Abbott, employed at Cliff and Co.’s printing establishment at Hastings, about 9 o’clock this morning. It appears that the young fellow was “feeding” a printing machine with envelopes when by some mischance one of these slipped out of his hand, and fell amongst the gear underneath. Without thought Abbott tried to recover the envelope, with the result that the palm of his right hand became jammed between the back of the platen, which was returning to its open position, and a steel roller. The bones of the fingers were crushed to pulp across the back of the palm, which was almost severed. Dr. McKibbin, who attended the sufferer, found it necessary to amputate all the fingers and a portion of the palm below the finger joints.
