After inspecting the racecourses in the North Island, with the exception of those in the Hawke's Bay province, the members of the Racing Commission will this week turn their attention to the South Island. The northern members and the secretary left Wellington on Saturday night for Christchurch, where they will be joined to-day by the South Island members. The week will be fully occupied in inspection of the courses in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. SWIMMING. The following handicaps have been declared by Messrs. HASTINGS LADIES’ CLUB.

The Hastings Ladies’ Gold Club held their annual meeting in the Old Library last night. Miss E. Baird presiding over a fair attendance. The secretary presented the balance-sheet and report, which were adopted. The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mrs. W. J. Douglas ; vice-president, Mrs. H. E. Beamish ; captains, senior players Mrs. Pinckney, junior players Mrs. R. W. Haise; secretary, Mrs. Murray: committee, Mrs. McKibbin, Misses Martin-Smith, E. O'Reilly and P. Baird. A number of new members were elected and everything promises well for a successful season. It was decided that Tuesday be kept as competition day.

CRICKET.

HAWKE’S BAY ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association was held last evening, in Napier, Mr. E. H. Williams (President) in the chair.

The Hawke’s Bay Sub-Associa-tion asked that a tram be sent to play at the match at Dannevirke against the sub-Association’s team before the close of the season, and the matter was left in the hands of Mr. E. W. Smyth to arrange. The Poverty Bay Cricket Association intimated that a junior representative team proposed ’visiting Napier at Easter.—Arrangements left in the hands of Messrs. W. J. Hughes and C. Elir.tr.

The City Band wore granted No. 3 wicket on the Recreation Ground for their annual match against Hastings on Saturday next. It was decided that the treasurer write to the delegates of various clubs in arrears with fees, with regard to their club's indebtedness and the necessity for a prompt settlement in view of the association’s straightened position. A sub-committee, with power to add to their number, was appointed to carry out the various entertainments being organised in aid of the association’s funds.

WORNE BENEFIT MATCH.

The Warne benefit match was abandoned owing to rain. There was no play to-dav.

Jarvis proved to be the runner-up and received a silver medal presented by the club. FESTIVAL OF EMPIRE.

Auckland, Mar. 20.

M. Champion, the Auckland swimmer, who has been selected to compete in the Festival of Empire sports, leaves for Wellington by the Main Trunk train to-morrow night to catch the Corinthic at Wellington, provided that a satisfactory sum is raised for the support of his dependants during his absence. Champion is in splendid form.
