AUCKLAND AERONAUT.

FLIGHT AT PAPAKURA.

A successful aeroplane flight took place at Papakura on Friday morning, says the Auckland Star, on Mr. Leo Walsh’s recently constructed machine. Mr. Walsh, with several others, has for some months past displayed a great interest in aeronautics, and just before Christmas he completed the construction of his machine, which is a biplane very similar to that in which Farman flew from London to Brussels. The parts were mostly imported from Home, and put together here. An early start was made yesterday at Papakura, by Mr. Walshand his party, and when everything was ready Mr. N. Walsh, a brother of Mr. Leo Walsh, took his seat in the machine, and the eight-cy-linder engine, capable of producing from 60 to 80 horse-power, was started. The machine started along the ground, then slowly rose over 20ft, and travelled 300 or 400 yards before reaching the ground, well under the airman’s control. The momentum sent the machine along

the ground for some distance, and it was finally brought to a standstill by the fence, practically no damage resulting. Every satisfaction was expressed at the first flight, and the news was received by the Auckland Aero Club with enthusiasm
