H.B. COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawke’s Bay County Council met this morning, when there were present Messrs. Mason Chambers (chairman), Clark, Stead, Rathie, Cross, Donnelly, Shrimpton, Bennett, and Simson. CLIVE GRANGE. Messrs. Garnett, Mackersey, and Hart waited on the Council with the object of obtaining further improvements to roads in the Clive Grange district. While expressing pleasure at what the council had already done, Mr. Garnett, for the deputation, urged that further work be undertaken, including the erection of notice boards warping persons against depositing rubbish, and the placing of a lifebuoy stand on the beach. He also mentioned the Waipatu road. Mr. W. Hatt said that, besides the fact that 250 to 500 people used the Grange as a seaside resort, there were 50 dwellings there at present, and it was possible that another twenty Would be erected before next Christmas.

The chairman spoke favourably of the requests, and said the matters would receive attention. Cr. Rathie pointed out that a lot of money had been spent at the Grange, and the rates collected only amounted to £5. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT. In his report the chairman said: The council was ascertaining the position of the council with regard to fires caused by traction engines. Woodford House School had been given permission to erect a telephone line. The appointments of the overseers should be confirmed (agreed to). Arrangements had been made to haul metal from Redcliffe, on the Taradale road, at a cost of 2/- per yard, the council to fill waggons. The Ngatawera stock resting reserve was under consideration.

The district engineer’s telephone line cost £lO.

Mr. J. Parker was appointed returning officer for the Harbour Board election. Mr. Groom should be asked to call a meeting to discuss the proposed diversion of Heretaunga Riding. I j A CONNECTING ROAD. ' R. D. R. McLean and others asked for the formation of a connecting road between old Kereru road and the Maraekakaho-Haxnp*-den road. Cr. Stead urged that what money was available should be spent on the main road. It would cost about £250, and money was now being spent on a deviation close by. The locality was getting an over-large share of the rates. Cr. Shrimpton suggested a report. The chairman thought a report wise. (Continued on Page 8.)
