MUSIC IN HAWKE'S BAY

(By Vox Humana.) Regarding music in Hawke's Bay. in the intial column of this paper. I would like to extend hearty felicitations to the musical people of the Province. I should also like to hear from musicians any liclie information or receive enquiries respecting the profession. Letters may be addressed to "Vox Humana.” care of "The Tribune,” Napier, or Hastings. Herr and Madame Lehmann are in Napier during the holidays. I am glad to hear that Miss Remington (a gifted teacher.) is nearly convalescent from her serious illness. Shortly before Christmas Mr Horace Welter gave a most successful pupils' concert. Already Mr Harston, of Napier, is busy in connection with the mixed choir for 1911 musical competitions. I hear that Mr St. Laurence Tone intends to train three special school choirs in connection with the 1911 competitions. I have to hand a dainty song

composed by Miss Remington. I entitled ‘'True to Thee.” It is certainly most original in style, and, possesses an artistic charm, and I the harmony is excellent. It should become popular. I attended the, services at St. Patrick’s, Napier, at Christmas, and I was delighted with the choir. The choir for some time past has not been too good, but Christmas night's selections were beautifully rendered. Mr Frank Maddigan’s ”O Salutaris” (specially composed for the occasion) was well given. It is a very fine piece of harmony, and of high standard. He is to be congratulated. Mr Sandford Moore in a lecture on ■Historical Music” at the JEolian Hall, given on the 21st of November last in London, while speaking about contemporary composers said that French music is distinctly trivial beside that of the contemporaneous German and Italian. A good story is told of Madame Melba, the celebrated vocalist. The diva was upset one day from a carriage when in Sydney. An Australian paper, after recording the incident, added : “We are Vappy to state that she was able t-. appear in four pieces.” The syllabus for 1911 of the Napier Musical and Elocutionary Competition Society will be to hand shortly.
