SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

ROWING.

In connection with W. I'ogwell's challenge to row George Whelch for £1 00 and the championship of New Zealand at tbe end of January, a reply has been received that the time proposed would be very unsuitable, and it is probable that the race will be set down for Easter Monday.

BOXING.

A rumour is going the rounds that Dick Arnst has designs on another world’s championship, and that his real reason for being in Sydney at the present time is to be tried out prior to sending a challenge to Jack Johnson. Needless to say, Arnst flatly 7 contradicts the soft impeachment. ■Bill” Rudd, w’ho defeated "Monty” Andrews (the Australian middle-weight) at Westport on Boxing Day, and has an engagement at Hastings on January 22nd, has no less than twenty-one victories to his credit. So far he has an unbeaten record.

RUDD v. MONTY ANDREWS, j An endeavour is being made to arrange another match between Rudd and Monty Andrews, the heavy-weights who met at Westport on Tuesday last, when Rudd won in the third round. Andrews claims that he had not properly recovered from a rough passage from Sydney when the bout took place, and consequently was unable to do himself justice. Rudd agrees that such was the case, and for that reason he is anxious to meet the Australian again. The Palmerston North Boxing Association has made an offer of a purse of £7O for a fifteen-round contest between these two boxers, but they will not entertain any offer less than £3O with £5 expenses. As both men have engagements in Australia, the match must take place within the next fortnight.
