NELSON.

Monday, Jan. 2. A SMART shock of earthquake was felt here on Saturday about 20 minutes after midnight. A brilliant meteor, in the form of a comet, passed from N.N.W. to S.S.JE.. apparently very low, about half-past 8 o'clock last evening. It burst like a rocket into numberless fragments on approaching the horizon. About fifteen minutes afterwards a loud report, resembling the discharge of a ship's* broadside, was heard.
