GOVERNMENT LTFE ASSURANCE. We await with considerable interest the appearance of the detailed plan of the Government for the disposal of annuities and life assurances, which was promised by the Colonial Treasurer in the financial statement. Mr Vogel truly said that, beyond the beneficent purpose it will fulfil in encouraging provident habits amongst the people, it would afford relief to the finance of the colony. At the present time life assurance is almost unknown in the colony, owing, in a great degree, to the exceMsively high premiums charged by the several Associations on lives, when the assured has his residence out of England. Some startling details in connection with the expense of management of some of the British Associations were gn'en by Mr Vogcl on his first introducing the subject to the House of Representatives,— whip]i expenditure, amounting to a
large proportion of income, will be saved almost entirely by the Government, and the benefit of such saving will be conferrable on the assured. On the appearance of the Go\ eminent scheme we skull take an opportunity of again referring to the subject.
