CHESS TOURNAMENT.

[press association.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The following games were played at the Championship Chess Tourney today;— Round Thirteen. Edwards v. W. E. Mason.—The latter resumed with a slight advantage. This he maintained, and won on move 97. John Mason v. Grierson.—The latter was sorely pressed for time, and hurried moves brought about his resignation at move 48.

Mackay v. Friberg.—This adjourned game, was completed at the fifty-fourth move, when Friberg capitulated. Round Fourteen. Forsyth v. Connell (French Defence). —Forsyth played below his usual form in the middle of the game. While expecting to lose he was given an opportunity of a brilliant mate in four.

W. E. Mason ,v- Friberg (Queen’s Gambit declined). Friberg played somewhat weakly, and bad to resign at move 37.

Edwards v. Sandford.—Edwards failed to take advantage of indifferent play by Sandford early in the game. Sandford developed a powerful attack, and won in 34 moves.

Pleasants v. Davies (Queen’s Gambit declined). —Davies was mated at the thirty-second move.

Woodford v. Brown (Giucco Piano). —lndifferent play resulted in a win for Brown in seventy-nine moves. Barnes v. Grierson (Evans Gambit declined.—Barnes lost a bishop by an oversight at the eighteenth move. He then made a lively attack, but Grierson, by careful defence, saved the situation, and, getting the upper hand, won comfortably. Miles v. John Mason (French Defence). —Play was even for thirty-four moves. Miles then left a bishop unprotected- Mason, seizing the opportunity, forced his opponent to resign at move 56.

Adair v. Mackay (Giucoo Piano). — The former obtained Mackay’s resignation at move 69.

The last round will commence in the morning. The indications are that John Mason and W. E. Mason will play off.
