TRAM ACCIDENT.
[PBES3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The inquest concerning the fatal tram accident on Christmas Ere was continued to-dav.
A motorman named Moyes gave evidence that on December 22nd he- reported that the track brake on car 39 (the double-deck car which ran away on Christmas Kve) would not apply, an d again on December £3rd he gave the same report. He mentioned the matter to the motor inspector one day, and wrote it on his waybill both days. He got the conductor to screw down the brake, and got below the car to look at it. He it just touched the rail, but there was no pressure. The Tramways Company called the motor inspector, who said that Moves told him that “ the trade brake was a bit crook, but he could manage with it all right.” The matter being put that way, the motor inspector did not pay much attention to the report. The motorman who ran the car on the morning of the accident was also called, and said be found the track brake a little stiff, but quite effective. He ran the car six trips, and used the track brake each trip. Mr Carey, chief electrical engineer to the Tramways Company, gave expert evidence.
The inquiry will conclude to morrow.
