A letter from our special correspondent at Bradford on oho wool and produce markets in Great Britain will bo found on the fourth prgo, with sporting news.

Captain Edwin wired at 12.13 p.m, yesterday as follows Expect glass fall j moderate easterly winds j moderate tides.”

The local examinations in mnsio (theory) by Trinity College, tendon, will be held as usual in Juno. Entries for them must be sent in to Mr W. T. Sharp not later than Saturday next! Ae Saturday is the Caledonian sports day, Messrs Wonley and Lanauae will hold their sale of Mr D. T. Murfitt’s stable plant, and other horses, &0., at Hastings on Friday next, 27th instant, at X.BO p.m. Mr A. J. Chamberlin, the well known tenor from Melbourne, was iu town yesterday on route to the South Island. Mr Chamberlin's flue voice has not been beard in Napier for some years past, but he has promised that if possible he will take part in the Cathedral choir concert at the Theatre Boyal on Easter Tuesday, the 14th April.

An old man named 6. M.'Kee, living with his family at Olivo, tried to commit suicide at about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon by cutting his throat with a razor. He had been ill for some time, and had been twice in hospital. The wound was attended to by Br. Maodonell, of Hastings, and the sufferer brought into Napier Hospital, where last night he was reported to be doing well.

A meeting of the Banfurly Bides was held after the battalion parade last evening. The financial position of the corps was gone into and discussed; it is very satisfactory. It wan decided to present the prizes won at the recent shooting on the evening of Wednesday week. Captain Eagar appointed Corporal Nutuio'n to be sergeant, and Privates H, Stevens, Beyer, and Nicholson to be lance-corporals. The men were then measured for their new uniforms by Mr Cos. The secretary of the forthcoming Caledonian sports, Mr T. Parker, has received word that D. Smith, tho well-known Queensland rnnnor, and winner of the milo and half-mile New Zealand championships, has definitely decided to be a competitor at the sports. Smith is undoubtedly the best man at these two distances at present taeing in the colony, and probably the beat mile rnnner we have seen, and the presence of snob a champion should prove a great attraction. The performers at the concert in the evening will include Miss Tausloy, of JDannevitke, and Master Victor Harris, a young violinist belonging to Woodville, who will shortly leave for Europe to continue his studies. We have to acknowledge tho receipt of two volumes of Messrs Longman and Co.’s Colonial Library. Mr A. Lang’s “The Disentangers” is a series of short tales containing the adventures of two impecunious young men who start a kind of private inquiry office, and undertake the work of patting right family qnarrels and arranging and disarranging matrimonial engagements. Most of those adventures are amusting, all ate told in a sprightly fashion, but some tax onr credulity to a degree. Incidentally, the author indulges in much mild satire of social foibles and vanities of various kinds. The book, like all Mr Lang’s work, is good reading. Mr C. Eddy’s "Winifred and tho Stockbroker” is a clever story of life on tbs stock exchange. A good deal of it is almost in farcical vein, bnt it is written with abundant good spirits and shows a close knowledge of the young man about town who has no particular abilities bat proposes to make a fortune on ’change. A striking feature of the book is the crisp and amnsing dialogue. It is an exceedingly creditable first attempt. The last Government inspection parade for the volunteer year of the Napier corps was held in the Dtillshed last evening, Captain Halpin being in command, All the corps had a (air master. The battalion staff officers present were Captain and Adjutant Hislop, Sergeant-Major Hughes, Quar-termaster-Sergeant Pox, and SergeantBugler Slater. Captain and Adjutant Hall, of the 6th Battalion, and Staff Sergeant-Major Finn were also on parade. The Napier Guards were under Lieutenant Eingland; Napier Eifles, Lieutenant Dixon; Banfurly Eiijos, Captain Eagar; City Cadets, Lieutenant Wilson; and Battalion Band, Bandmatter Driver. After inspection Captain Halpin read Colonel Hawaii's farewall order to the corps under his command, and notified that Colonel Webb had taken command of the district. Ho urged upon all tho corps the neceaaity for regular attendance at parades, and asked individual members to make an effort with the opening of the now volunteer year to improve their corps both in efficiency and numbers. The companies were exercised by their respective commanders in various movements, and soma very useful work was done.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr Turnbull, S.M., two first offenders wore convicted of drnnkenness and discharged. Jeremiah O’Rourke was fined 5» and 7s costs for driving a vehicle in the borough without lights after sundown. For failing to obey an order of the court to contribute towards the support of his father, John Hyman was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor, the warrant to be suspended it defendant pays 14s by the 9th instant, and monthly instalments of £1 thereafter, until the amount of arrears, £9O, is paid. Frederick Charles Collins, charged with being found on licensed premises at Woipawa during the currency of a prohibition order against him, forwarded a letter admitting tho charge, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sontence when called upon, Kathleen Dowuia was remanded for a week on a charge of vsgranoy. Henry Stanley, charged with committing an indecent assault on his adopted daughter, pleaded not guilty. After evidence had been given, tho accused was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Bail was granted, himself in £l5O and two sureties of £76.

The meeting of members of the Holiday Association and other Napier shopkeepers, held at the Connell Chambers yesterday, was well attended, and the feeling of those present, as shown by their reception of the speakers, and also by their votes, was decidedly in favor of reverting to Wednesday as the day for the weekly half-holiday for shops. Two applications were received by the association for Wednesday half-holidays-one for the Fire Brigades’ Demonstration in March and the other for the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s autumn show in April. It was decided to reply that there was a possibility of a permanent reversion to Wednesday at an early date. These applications were regarded by Mr J. P. Thomson as strong arguments in favor of a return to Wednesday. Ho pointed out that the Wednesday half-holiday had become an established thing, and that after much trouble the Holiday Association had got sporting and other bodies to recognise it. The change to Saturday had undone all that work, besides being seriously detrimental from a business point of view. Mr John M'Vay remarked that there had been cases under the previous system in which the halfholiday was changed to Monday and other days. Mr Thomson retorted that those were exceptional oases. The principal resolution passed by yesterday’s meeting is to be conveyed without delay to the Borough Council, whose next regnlar meeting will be held on Wednesday, the 4th March. At the sale ct sheep from the Milbourne estate on Tuesday last a letter from the sheep inspector was read stating that although the sheep had not been dipped this season, authority was granted to give delivery of them. The stock inspector afterwards congratulated Mr W. White, of Kaikora, ' upou the efficiency of his dip, at the same time stating that from an inspection of the sheep he hod not found any vermin among them. The valno of this testimonial is more marked when it is remembered that at the sale of the Batumi sheep two years ago the inspectors refused to allow the sheep to be removed before they were dipped. The Milbourne estate has used the same dip for the past fifteen years.— [Advt.J To meet the wishes of customers, the Excelsior Dairy Supply Company has ordered from an American house of repute specially made bottles for eupplying half-pinto of cream. The Christmas demand has shown that half-pints are mnch inquired for by private families. A farther supply of milk bottles has also been ordered.
