PUBLIC BODIES' LIABILITY.

[by telegraph.] *■ Invebcaegill, Thursday.

In the Supreme Court to-day the jury i awarded Mrs Aitken £15 damages. The i claim was for £200 for injuries sustained : by her through her horse shying at a : heap of stones placed at the side of the road among the long grass and thistles by the servants of the Southland County. The stones had been pnt there on Saturday afternoon to execute some repairs, and the plaintiff was thrown out of the trap on Sunday while going to church. A stay of judgment for 14 days was granted. Cases suoh as ' this are perplexing the publio bodies in this distriot, Wallace County having recently been oast in heavy damages in a similar aotion, ■where timber to repair a culvert was laid alongside the site of the work. It is urged that it will be very costly if publio bodies have to keep material out of sight and bring it on the ground bit by bit. In thiß case the carter said he was instructed to put the stones in the safest place he oould flnd, and seleoted the spot because tbe horses could see it from-a distance on either side.
